Abstract

The application of cavity varnish to an apical preparation prior to retrofilling with amalgam has been advocated on the basis of in vitro studies showing that it markedly reduces marginal leakage. The like-lihood of direct contact of the varnish with vital osseous and connective tissues during and after application to the apical preparation is an important consideration. For this reason, the cytotoxicity of cavity varnish was assessed using mesenchymal clonal L cells and was compared with the cytotoxicity of a commonly used zinc oxide-eugenol-based root canal sealer. Results indicated that the tested cavity varnish (Copalite) was nontoxic to cellular monolayers and that the tested sealer (Tubliseal) was cytotoxic under the test conditions.
